Times of India | Indore, India’s cleanest city, is now country’s best smart city too

Surat and Indore have bagged the best award for their overall performance in 2020, whereas Uttar Pradesh won the state award, among 100 Smart Cities. Madhya Pradesh bagged the second, while Tamil Nadu found itself in the third spot.

Referring to this, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister tweeted that as many as 11 of the 20 awards have been conferred to Indore, Bhopal, Gwalior, Sagar and Jabalpur smart cities, which is a reflection of hard work of people, who are working tirelessly working on smart city projects.

He congratulated the administration of Indore after the city featured in the list of top 10 cities in the Ease of Living Index released by the Centre. Indore ranked the ninth-best city among cities with over a million population.

The Chief Minister also appreciated the efforts of Indore and Bhopal administrations after the cities ranked first and third respectively in the Municipal Performance Index released by the central government.

Indore, which has managed to clinch Swachh city awards four times in a row, was adjudged the overall smart city winner, jointly with Surat, under the India Smart Cities Award Contest (ISAC) of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for the year 2020. The results were announced on Friday.

Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri recently released the Ease of Living Index and the Municipal Performance Index. As per the reports, two lists, i.e., cities with more than a million population and less than a million population, were released based on the assessment of 111 cities. Indore is followed by Surat and Bhopal as the highest-ranked municipalities, whereas Kota, Guwahati, and Srinagar ranked the lowest.

As per the list, Bengaluru topped the list of cities with more than a million population, while Shimla grabbed the first position with less than a million population. Further, among municipalities catering to a population of less than a million, New Delhi Municipal Council ranked first, while Imphal, Shillong, and Kohima municipalities were ranked at the bottom of the list.
